Swiss Alps on a shoestring

The Swiss Alps need no introduction. In August 2022 my friend Alex kindly put together a ten day roadtrip to explore some bucket list destinations on a shoestring budget.

We slept in a van and moved to a new destination most nights. This trip is a sequel to a trip in the Tyrolean Alps five years ago.

First we ticked off some iconic destinations like Lauterbrunnen Valley and also walked up to the base of the North face of the Eiger.

Next we conquered the Via Ferrata up to Mt Emelius in Aosta, Italy. We stayed the night in a bivvy hut. The meadows leading up to the treeline were dotted with fresh berries.

The ibex, a mountain goat known for its climbing prowess was once on the brink of extinction. The small herd at the Gran Paradiso National Park contains all the genetic variation of the species after the bottleneck event.

The final leg of the trip took in views of the Matterhorn from the Italian side. We also visited Chamonix on the French side, got a glimpse of the Mt Blanc massif and visited the flagship Decathlon in Passy.
